5 sure-fire ways to remove odour from your car.

The stench of spilled milk. The smell of stale cigarettes. Left some food in your vehicle for days? Here are some powerful ways to tackle odour in your car.

rinse-and-clean

1. Rinse and clean!
Every odour has a source, so the first thing you need to do is locate it and clean it thoroughly. Once you’ve identified the source, rinse it with cool water, or try a solution of two parts distilled white vinegar (an effective acidic cleaner) to one part water. Blot the stain with paper towels, applying pressure to remove as much of the stain as possible. This step alone can do wonders for removing odours.

bake-the-car2. Bake the car?

To treat soiled carpets, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the affected area and allow it to sit overnight. Vacuum the baking soda up, then run a steam cleaner filled with distilled white vinegar over the area. ‘Bake’ the car in the sun with the doors open to allow the carpet to dry completely.

chemical-warfare

3. Chemical warfare.
There are various chemical-based cleaners that perform different tasks. Disinfectants (eg. Mr.Clean®) eliminate organic substances such as mold and mildew and fix odours by killing these organisms. Absorbents (eg. activated charcoal) attract odour molecules and trap them within their internal matrix. Both options are extremely effective and can be easily purchased in hardware stores. Just remember to follow their instructions closely to ensure safe and proper application in your car.

out-with-the-old

4. Out with the old!

Replace your cabin air filter. Yes, it’s that easy. You’d be surprised what a new cabin air filter can do!

your-own-ozone-layer

5. Your own ozone layer?
For really, really stubborn odours, use an ozone generator to treat the interior of the vehicle. A method used by hotels and hospitals, ozone contains a third oxygen atom which attaches itself to odour molecules. When contaminants such as odours, bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, their chemical structure is weakened and is eventually destroyed. Ozone 1 : Odour 0!
