Love, love, love.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. We caught up with three Volkswagen owners who shared with us what ‘love’ means to them, and prove that love is indeed all around.

What is ‘love’ to you?

Being accepted and totally comfortable with the people you care about. Getting that warm fuzzy feeling with a special someone even with the smallest of gestures – that’s true love!

Being currently single, what do you like most about it?

Space! I get to do whatever I want, whenever I want and with whoever I want (laughs). But more importantly, being single gives me time to reflect and prepare myself for the next person I’d like to share my life with. Anyway, I always have my car for companionship.

Speaking of which, what do you love about your Passat CC?

I love the engine! Mine is a rare 3.6-litre V6 with 300 PS. In other markets, it’s called the V6 4MOTION, which sounds really cool to me. But yes, the lovely engine gets the thumbs up from me.

Is it possible to be in love with a car?

For sure! I have had the privilege of owning several rides through my years of driving and I’ve been madly in love with many of them. But I must say that it’s also possible to feel hatred towards the bad ones too!

How do you plan to spend Valentine’s Day this year?

Single people have friends too! I did meet someone recently and we plan to spend the day together. The rest is for me to know and not for you to find out!

The lovey-dovey couple.
Owners: Daryl Kah and Robyn Marie
Model: Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI

What is ‘love’ to you?

Daryl: It is the attraction towards someone special that you can spend both happy and unhappy times with.
Robyn: Love is helping each other grow into better people through support, understanding and compromise.

What do you like most about each other?

Daryl: Her openness and adventurous spirit.
Robyn: Daryl is really patient and kind.

How long have you had your Scirocco and what do you love most about it?

Daryl: I’ve had it for seven months and I love the agility and handling.
Robyn: I like so many things about it but probably the best thing is that it’s sooooo spacious up front.

Any interesting experience to share?

Robyn: The first time we gave our friend a lift home, I had forgotten that the Scirocco is a 2-door car and was wondering why she didn’t alight when we reached her house. It was a good 10 seconds before I realised she was waiting for me to get out first!

How has your car played a part in your relationship with your significant other?

Robyn: It’s something Daryl wanted to get for a long time and we discussed it carefully before going ahead. Supporting each other with big decisions like that brings us closer.

How do you plan to spend Valentine’s Day?

Daryl: I’ll get some flowers and make reservations for a nice dinner. Robyn: Oh really? Ok then (laughs)!

The cool family.
Owners: Clarence, Christine and Chad Ting
Model: Volkswagen Golf R

How long have you been married and what do you like most about each other?

Hmmm, let me count (Clarence leans over to Christine and whispers) – yes, nine and a half years! I love it that we are 98% different in 98 different ways. She is attractively creative; I am straightly logical.

What is ‘love’ to you?

Love is patient and kind. Love protects, trusts, hopes and always perseveres.

That’s sweet! Since we’re on the topic, how long have you had that lovely Volkswagen of yours?

We’ve had the Golf R for about seven months. I remember the day vividly as we had waited a few weeks for the car to be delivered from Germany and we had planned to collect it on the same week as Christine’s Hatch-day.

How has your car played a part in your relationship with your family?

We go everywhere in it. Our toddler Chad Isaiah enjoys the G-forces around the corners and Christine loves how her favourite MP3 albums come up on the infotainment system! The first month we had the car, we drove it up to Malacca as an excuse to run-in the car. The drive was just so sweet. Chad, who was 6 months old then, literally slept through the entire journey in his Recaro babyseat while I was enjoying myself behind the wheel.

Wow, you must really love your car!

We all do! The Golf R has factory adjustable dampers that can be customized on the run which is very convenient. It can be a comfortable family runabout, or a scorching hot-hatch.

So how do you plan to spend Valentine’s Day?

Go out for brunch, chill and enjoy some family time, which of course includes the Golf!
