It’s been said that the only time you should look back is to see how far you’ve come. So as Volkswagen Group Singapore celebrates its 10th anniversary in March this year, we take a look at some defining moments for the brand in the past decade!
2007: New beginnings.
Retail operations are established locally. Volkswagen is the only automobile manufacturer to manage its Singapore-based retail business directly from its premises at 247 Alexandra Road. This allows for a closer relationship between the brand and its customers.
2007: Power at its heart.
The award-winning TSI twin-charging technology reaches our shores in the Golf GT. Its 1.4 TSI engine was the first of its kind to combine impressive performance with excellent fuel efficiency, which widely earned praise from the motoring press.
2008: TDI arrives in Singapore.
Volkswagen introduces TDI diesel technology in Singapore, found in models like the Polo BlueMotion and the Touran. It is one of the first to introduce diesel passenger cars here.
2009: ‘Roc and roll.
The thrilling Scirocco is named ‘Straits Times Car of the Year 2009’ and is praised for its stunning design, build quality, efficiency and performance.
2010: Bigger, better, bolder.
Expansion of the Alexandra showroom takes place to cater to more owners, with an Aftersales service facility that is 111% larger. More members of the sales team, service advisors and receptionists are added to better serve customers.
2010: Spoilt for choice?
14 new models were launched, including the Touran, Golf Mk 6 and the second-generation Touareg. The 1.2L engine was also introduced, which helped reduce running costs across these TSI models in Singapore.
2011: Happy birthday, hot hatch.
In celebration of 35 years of the Golf GTI, the special edition Golf GTI E35 is launched in Singapore. With 235 PS of power, it was the most powerful GTI variant of its time.
2012: East side represent!
A second Volkswagen showroom opens at MacPherson standing at 93,421 square feet. It features the full range of Aftersales services, a large new workshop and more Aftersales staff to better serve customers.
2013: Three times lucky.
The Golf is the ‘Straits Times Car of the Year 2013’, making this the third time a Volkswagen has received this award. (Golf GTI in 2005, and Scirocco in 2009)
2014: Pre-loved goodness.
Das WeltAuto (Pre-Owned Vehicles) opens at Chang Charn Road, making Volkswagen the first car manufacturer to run a pre-owned car facility in Singapore. Complete with a 115-point check, additional warranty coverage and full service history, customers could enjoy more quality choices.
2014: Strictly business.
Volkswagen commercial vehicles are introduced in Singapore. The Caddy Maxi, along with refreshed versions of the Caddy and Transporter offer fleet and business owners more choices to meet their business needs. They feature class-leading warranties, service packages and even longer service intervals that improves efficiency and lowers the total cost of ownership.
2014: Back to school.
‘My Volkswagen programme’ is launched. New owners are invited back to the showroom to learn about the various features of their new cars, and pick up servicing and maintenance tips.
2015: Making a splash.
To show its support of sports culture in Singapore, Volkswagen begins its sponsorship of the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA). A Passat and Transporter are provided to support the facilitation of the SSA’s activities.
2015: Fast and furiously fun.
The Express Friday service is introduced. From relaxing massages, to free shuttle services to nearby malls for lunch or shopping, it gives owners a chance to unwind while their car is being serviced (15k/30k servicing appointments).
2015: Wedding bells.
The Volkswagen wedding car rental programme commences in Singapore. Couples are able to choose from the iconic Beetle or open-top Beetle Cabriolet for their special day.
2016: More to love.
The Golf Variant and Passat Variant join the model range in Singapore. These stylish and versatile models feature heaps of cargo space (up to 1,780 litres!) and come with striking R-Line exterior styling too!
2016: Convenience at your fingertips.
Online service booking is introduced in Singapore. Fast, easy and convenient, owners can now book servicing appointments on the go.
2016: Fun? Double confirm!
From music nights to food workshops, Volkswagen Singapore has been organising lifestyle events for owners and their loved ones since 2014. But 2016 saw their first ever Comedy Night come to light; featuring local funny-man Hossan Leong (or rather, his alter-ego Mdm Miriam Leong-Lim)!
2017: Livin’ the VolksLife.
Volkswagen Singapore’s monthly customer magazine VolksMag transforms into VolksLife – a one-stop online lifestyle portal for news and all-round interesting reads!
