You might already know that Currywurst is a common German fast food dish. What you probably didn’t know is that Volkswagen prepares and serves their very own version of this mouth-watering dish at a restaurant in their Wolfsburg factory. In fact, Volkswagen sold about 7.2 million curry sausages in 2015, twice the number sold in 2008!
Currywurst is basically a steamed-first-then-fried pork sausage served with a curry-flavoured tomato sauce, sprinkled with curry powder for that extra kick. Here is a make-your-own Currywurst recipe you just have to try!
Pork sausages are ideal, but if you want a halal meal, a good chicken or beef sausage would suffice too. Be sure to purchase the real deal with meat chunks in it. Avoid hotdog franks and sausages with flour and fillers.
But remember, the real star in Currywurst is the sauce, not the sausage!
Making the sauce is really easy to make and should only take about 10 minutes. Read on for the recipe below!
For 500 ml of sauce:
• 500 ml of cola to boil down to 100 ml
• 6 tablespoons of applesauce
• 2 tablespoons curry powder to stir (2 more if you like it spicy!)
• 1 teaspoon Tabasco
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 2 teaspoons lime juice
• 400 ml of ketchup
• Season with salt
Boil the cola till it is reduced to about 100 ml. Then add the remaining ingredients, season with salt and bring to a boil again. You may pour the sauce over the sausages, or add the sausages to the sauce and stir it briefly before serving. That’s it! Your fiery Currywurst is ready to be enjoyed!
