Work and play.

Edward Chia, co-founder of healthy food eatery Dosirak, tells us how his Jetta helps with his business and shares some tips on eating right.

edward_carThat’s a very sleek Jetta. How long have you had it?

About a year now. My brother and I initially wanted to get a Scirocco because it’s such a good looking car! But after checking it out at the showroom, we felt that the Jetta was more suited for our business needs – like transporting equipment for the events that Dosirak caters food for.

Wow! Can you really fit everything you need in a Jetta?

You’d be surprised! For our recent event at the Volkswagen showroom, I fit in a trolley, tables, tongs and extra containers. The cool thing about the Jetta is that you can fold down the back seats so you ‘extend’ the already spacious boot.

As a business owner, would you say that Dosirak and the Volkswagen brand are similar?

We’re both about packing quality in a compact product. At Dosirak, we package each meal in compact lunchboxes. It’s a perfect 300-320 grams of fresh, nutritious, well-prepared food – all under 500 calories. And with Volkswagen too, you’ve got tons of high quality features and technology even in compact cars like the Golf or Jetta!

Can you describe your Jetta in 3 words?

Can I do 3 syllables? ‘Trans-for-mer’. (laughs) Because if you need to transport loads of stuff for work, it’s the ideal car! But when you want to just use it as a fun family sedan, you can as well!

Edward’s top tips to healthy eating.

Cafes, restaurants, food courts, the options for tasty food in Singapore are aplenty. But – how do we make better choices when deciding what to snack on next? Edward shares more.

Know what you’re eating.

Look out for eateries like Dosirak that are transparent about the ingredients they use and methods of preparation. “It’s not just about the calorie count. Find out how the food is prepared and how it’s seasoned,” Edward explains.

It’s all about balance.

Balanced meals are the way to go. “Try to eat a variety of meats and choose foods with lots of nutritional value,” he explains. “Aim for three meals a day and don’t skip any or you’ll be tempted to snack in between.”

Say hello to healthier alternatives.

“Watch out for fried foods!” Edward says with a laugh. He explains that there are many healthier methods of cooking that still bring out a lot of taste. “You can roast or fry chicken, but either way it’s still tasty. At Dosirak we sous-vide some of our meats so it cooks in its own juices. Lots of flavour, without the need for excess oil.”

Freshness matters.

Fresh ingredients are rich with nutrients and make your meal that much tastier. Keep a close eye on meals served with gravy or curry which could mask the freshness of the ingredients. After all, the last thing you want to do is consume empty calories!
